As executive director of the Susie King Taylor Women's Institute and Ecology Center, I have a personal connection to this history. My maternal great-great-grandfather, Major Martin, escaped slavery and served as a soldier with the United States Colored Troop, aiding in the liberation of enslaved Black people and the unification of this country.
